How to Use Image to Text
- Upload an image. Drag in a photo, screenshot, or scan, or click to choose a file. The picture shows as a thumbnail so you know it loaded.
- Pick the language. Choose the language of the text in the image. Matching the language gives the recognition engine the best chance at an accurate read.
- Run the recognition. Click Extract text. The Tesseract engine runs in your browser and a progress bar tracks it. The first run for a language downloads a small model, then it is cached.
- Copy or download. When the text appears, use Copy text to grab it or Download to save a .txt file. The image and the text stay on your device.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. Recognition runs in your browser with the Tesseract engine, so both the image and the extracted text stay on your device.
Why is the first run slow?
The first time you use a language, the tool downloads a small recognition model. After that it is cached, so later scans in the same language are much faster.
How do I get the most accurate text?
Use a sharp, well lit image where the text is straight and high in contrast. Clean screenshots and flat scans read best, while blurry or angled photos are harder.
Which languages are supported?
English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Dutch. Select the one that matches your image before you run it.
Can it read handwriting?
It is built for printed and typed text and does very well there. Handwriting is far less reliable and results will vary a lot.
Can it read a PDF?
This tool reads image files, not PDFs directly. If your text is in a PDF, take a screenshot of the page or export it as an image first, then run that through the tool.
