Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 50/30/20 rule?

It is a simple budgeting guide: spend about 50% of after-tax income on needs, 30% on wants, and put 20% toward savings and debt.

What counts as a need versus a want?

Needs are essentials like housing, food, utilities and minimum debt payments. Wants are things you enjoy but could live without, like dining out and subscriptions.

Can I change the percentages?

Yes. High rent areas may need more than 50% for needs, while aggressive savers might push savings above 20%. Enter whatever split you want.

Should I use gross or net income?

Use after-tax, take-home income, since that is the money you actually budget with.

What if my needs are over 50%?

That is common in expensive cities. Trim wants first, and treat lowering fixed costs as a longer term goal.

Is my data private?

Yes. The calculation runs entirely in your browser.
