The contribution margin is the selling price minus the variable cost, the amount each sale contributes toward fixed costs. Once you pass the break-even units, every extra sale is profit.
How to Use Break-Even Calculator
- Enter your fixed costs. Add the costs you pay regardless of sales, like rent and salaries.
- Set the price. Enter the price you sell each unit for.
- Add the variable cost. Enter the cost to make or deliver one unit.
- Read your break-even. See how many units and how much revenue you need to cover all your costs.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the break-even point?
It is the level of sales where your total revenue equals your total costs, so you make neither a profit nor a loss.
How is it calculated?
Divide your fixed costs by the contribution margin, which is the selling price minus the variable cost per unit. The result is the number of units you must sell.
What is contribution margin?
It is how much each sale contributes toward covering fixed costs, equal to the price minus the variable cost. A higher margin means fewer units to break even.
Why can’t I break even sometimes?
If your variable cost is equal to or higher than your price, every sale loses money, so no volume will ever cover your fixed costs. Raise the price or cut the cost.
How do I use this for pricing?
Test different prices to see how the break-even units change. A higher price lowers the units you need but may reduce demand.
