How to Use Create Opaque WebP

  1. Drop a WebP file. The tool validates the RIFF/WEBP magic bytes - non-WebP files are rejected with a specific error.
  2. Pick a background color via the visual picker, hex field, or one of 8 quick-preset chips.
  3. (Optional) lower WebP quality for smaller files. Default 1.0 = highest quality.
  4. The tool draws the chosen color, then layers your WebP on top. Transparent pixels show the background; opaque pixels stay untouched.
  5. Compare side by side. The original preview uses a checkerboard backing to make transparent areas visible.
  6. Copy the data URI for embedding or download. Filename includes dimensions and color hex.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s “magic-byte validation”?

Every WebP file starts with the bytes R I F F at offset 0 and W E B P at offset 8. The tool reads the first 12 bytes and checks both markers. This is more reliable than checking MIME type or file extension – those can be wrong or missing.

What if my WebP is already opaque?

The tool counts transparent pixels (alpha < 255) and shows the percentage. If 0%, you get an info toast: “Input has no transparent pixels – operation had no visible effect”. The output is still produced (you can compare bytes if you want), but visually it’s identical to the input.

Why might my output be PNG instead of WebP?

Some old browsers (Safari pre-14, embedded WebViews) can’t encode WebP from canvas. The tool detects this – the banner at the top shows ✓ WebP or ⚠ PNG fallback. On fallback, the output is PNG and a toast tells you. As of 2026, ~99% of browsers support WebP encoding.

Does the algorithm preserve image quality?

The non-transparent pixels are drawn unchanged from the source via Canvas’s drawImage. The compositing math is alpha-blend over the chosen color, so semi-transparent edges (alpha < 255) get the color mixed in proportionally. Fully opaque pixels (alpha = 255) survive bit-exact. Then re-encoding at the chosen quality may introduce small WebP compression changes.

What about anti-aliased edges (alpha 1-254)?

These pixels get partially mixed with the background color according to their alpha. A 50%-transparent red pixel with a white background becomes a 100%-opaque pink pixel (the color is blended). This is the correct, expected behavior for alpha compositing – it’s what would happen when displayed against a white background anywhere.

What’s the file size limit?

10 MB. Larger files work in principle but the Canvas getImageData step gets memory-heavy on multi-MP images. For batch processing of huge WebP files, use a script (sharp / Pillow / cwebp) instead.

Can I drag-and-drop?

How does the quality slider affect output?

WebP quality 0 = maximum compression with visible artefacts; quality 1 = highest quality, larger file. For opaque output (no alpha to preserve losslessly), quality 0.8-0.92 is usually a good size/quality compromise. The default is 1.0.

What’s in the download filename?

Format: {original-stem}-opaque-{w}x{h}-{hexNoHash}.{ext}. E.g., photo-opaque-1920x1080-ffffff.webp. The hex makes it obvious which background color you used.

Is anything uploaded?

No. Canvas API runs in the browser. Your file never leaves your device.
