How to Use Anagram Solver Online Tool
- Enter Your Letters: Type any word or collection of letters into the input field. For example, "listen", "astronomer", or "dormitory". The tool automatically removes spaces, numbers, and special characters, keeping only letters (a-z). You can enter between 2 and 12 letters for optimal performance.
- Review Letter Information: Once you enter letters, you'll see a breakdown showing the letter frequency (e.g., "7 letters: l, i, s, t, e, n"). This helps you understand what you're working with and can hint at possible word patterns.
- Adjust Options (Optional): Set the minimum word length to filter out short words (default is 2 letters). If you want only longer, more meaningful words, increase this to 3, 4, or even 5 letters. You can also set the maximum number of results to displayhigher values may take longer to process but show more complete results.
- Click "Find Anagrams": Press the button to start solving. The tool uses an efficient algorithm that checks your letters against a built-in English dictionary (10,000+ common words). Processing typically takes under 1 second for most words, though longer inputs (10+ letters) may take 2-3 seconds.
- Browse Results: Anagrams are displayed in a clean list, grouped by word length and sorted alphabetically. Each result shows a length badge (e.g., "6 letters") and has a copy button for quick copying to your clipboard.
- Use Filters: Narrow down results using the filter options:
- Starts with: Show only anagrams beginning with specific letters
- Ends with: Show only anagrams ending with specific letters
- Contains: Show only anagrams containing a specific substring
- Copy or Download Results: Use "Copy All" to copy every found anagram to your clipboard (one per line), or "Download" to save results as a .txt file. Individual anagrams can also be copied using the copy button next to each result.
- Try Examples: Click "Load Example" to pre-fill the tool with interesting words that have many anagrams (like "listen" "silent", "enlist", "inlets"). Use "Shuffle Letters" to randomize the input and see patterns differently.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an anagram?
An anagram is a word or phrase formed by rearranging the letters of another word or phrase, using all original letters exactly once. For example, “listen” and “silent” are anagrams because they use the same 6 letters (l, i, s, t, e, n) in different orders. Anagrams are popular in word games like Scrabble, crossword puzzles, and creative writing.
How does the anagram solver work?
The tool uses a letter-frequency algorithm combined with a dictionary lookup. First, it analyzes the frequency of each letter in your input (e.g., “listen” has 1 ‘l’, 1 ‘i’, 1 ‘s’, etc.). Then, it scans through a built-in English dictionary (10,000+ common words) and checks which dictionary words can be formed using your exact letter set. This approach is much faster than generating all possible permutations (which would be millions for long words).
Does the tool find multi-word anagrams?
The current version focuses on single-word anagrams for optimal performance and simplicity. Multi-word anagrams (like “astronomer” “moon starer”) require exponentially more computation because they involve checking combinations of 2+ words. For most word game and puzzle use cases, single-word anagrams are sufficient. We may add multi-word support in a future update.
Why didn’t the tool find all possible anagrams?
There are a few reasons you might not see every possible anagram: (1) Dictionary limitations: The tool uses a compact dictionary of ~10,000 common English words. Very rare, archaic, or technical words may not be included. (2) Minimum word length filter: If you set a minimum of 3+ letters, shorter words are excluded. (3) Max results cap: If there are hundreds of anagrams, the tool may stop at the max results limit (default 500) to prevent browser slowdown. (4) Proper nouns: Names, places, and brands are generally excluded from the dictionary.
Can I use this tool for Scrabble or Words with Friends?
Yes! The anagram solver is perfect for word games. Enter the letters from your Scrabble rack or game tiles, and the tool will show all valid words you can make. Use the minimum word length filter to focus on longer words (which typically score more points). The tool only shows real dictionary words, so all results are valid for most word games. However, always check your specific game’s dictionary, as some games have slightly different word lists.
What’s the maximum word length the tool can handle?
For best performance, we recommend inputs of 2-10 letters. The tool can handle up to 12 letters, though solving time increases significantly for longer words (10-12 letters may take 2-5 seconds). Inputs longer than 12 letters will show a warning because the computational complexity becomes very high. If you need to solve very long inputs, try breaking them into smaller chunks.
Are the results sorted in any particular order?
Yes! Results are sorted first by word length (longest words first), then alphabetically within each length group. This makes it easy to spot longer, more valuable words quickly. For example, if you enter “listen”, you’ll see 6-letter words like “enlist” and “silent” first, followed by 5-letter words like “inlet” and “tiles”, and so on down to 2-letter words.
Is my data private? Does the tool save my searches?
Yes, your privacy is protected! All anagram solving happens 100% in your browser using JavaScript. No data is sent to any server, and nothing is stored or logged. You can even use the tool offline after the page loads. Your letter inputs and results never leave your device.
Can I use special characters or wildcards?
The current version only supports standard English letters (a-z). Numbers, punctuation, spaces, and special characters are automatically stripped from your input. Wildcard support (using ‘?’ or ‘*’ for unknown letters) is not currently available but may be added in a future update. For now, enter only the known letters you have.
Does the tool work on mobile devices?
Yes! The anagram solver works perfectly on smartphones and tablets. The interface is fully responsive and touch-friendly. You can use it on any modern mobile browser (Safari, Chrome, Firefox) without installing an app. All processing happens on your device, so it works fast even on mobile connections. The keyboard shortcuts adapt automatically to touch gestures.
